In its fourth year, this is a collaborative report representing the largest ever analysis of the Build-to-Rent (BTR) sector in England. It analyses over 122 schemes totalling over 40,000 residents on more than 19,000 homes. The sample analysed in the survey accounts for over a quarter of all BTR homes completed in the UK.

At present BTR still accounts for a small proportion of total rental stock in the UK but it is growing fast and its potential to relieve some of the pressure on housing supply is evident. The conclusion from the research continues to reinforce that BTR is delivering well-designed homes that provide value for money for renters with its extensive range of amenities and long leases.

A key finding from the research is that 92% of BTR schemes offer tenancies of up to three years and a quarter offer more than three years highlighting the security it offers. Another is that couples and sharers living in BTR spend less of their household income on rent than those in the wider private rented sector.

The report was launched at the UKAA’s Annual BTR Conference and Industry Awards in November 2022 and was well received. Highlighting the scale and depth of analysis that can be achieved on the BTR sector when organisations are willing to share data and market knowledge.
